Free To Be Me

“Sit up, don’t slouch” she says again
“leave me alone,” I want to yell
“stop pestering me
why won’t you just leave me be me”.

“Comb your hair,
Wash your face,
Do something with yourself”.  She says
in that special tone of voice used just for me.
“Leave me alone.” I want to yell
“Stop pestering me,
why won’t you just let me be free to be me.”

“Eat your dinner
Drink your milk
Elbows off the table
Pull your chair in.”
She continued harping
“Leave me alone.” I yell
“stop pestering me
why don’t you just let me be free to be me?”

Now I am the one doing the harping,
pestering and nagging
and my child repeating my own words back to me.
Leave me alone,” she yells.
“Stop pestering me
why don’t you just let me be free to be me?”
